Review: Sin City
A large amount of the film's violence is explicitly sexualised, and equally, the film's depiction of sexuality is implicitly violent in its nature. This is most effectively seen in the film's obsession with the phallic nature of weaponry, and of castration; When Hartigan catches the pederast he has been pursuing, he disarms him and then shoots him in the testicles, saying "I took away his weapons, both of them". Because of this the film undoubtedly promotes a typically male view of women and their sexuality. Marv's parole officer is described as a 'Dyke' but this is followed with the caveat that "I don't understand that, she could have any man she wanted." It should also be noted that this particular sequence shows the lady in question walking around topless, carrying a revolver. This is, in fact the main fault of the film; all the women in Sin City are defined solely in terms of their male counterparts, and the men are defined solely in terms of the violence they visit upon their enemies. Meaningless sex and meaningless Violence are all there is in Sin City, both acting solely as as expression of impotent frustration against the omnipotent Rourke regime.
